Vijayawada Metro Rail Project enters key stage as tenders invited for phase 1 construction
text_fieldsThe Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) has initiated the tendering process for Phase 1 of the Vijayawada Metro Rail Project.
It is a significant step forward for the long-anticipated urban transit initiative.
Tenders have been floated under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, aiming to streamline project execution by integrating all stages — design, procurement, and construction — under single contractors.
Phase 1 will cover a total length of 38.40 kilometers across two major corridors, with the development of 32 elevated metro stations and one underground station.
The estimated budget for this phase stands at approximately ₹4,150 crore.
Corridor 1 will stretch 25.95 kilometers from Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) to Gannavaram Bus Stand, featuring 22 stations. A standout component of this corridor is a 4.7-kilometer double-decker flyover, designed to enhance traffic flow and optimise urban space.
Corridor 2 will extend 12.45 kilometers from PNBS to Penamaluru and will consist of 12 metro stations.
The project is expected to be completed within 30 months from the start date, with the double-decker flyover targeted for completion in 24 months. This timeline reflects the government's emphasis on expediting urban infrastructure development.
This progress follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TYPSA Consultancy, appointed as the general consultant for the project. TYPSA will oversee planning, design, and implementation, ensuring international quality standards are met throughout the construction process.
The Vijayawada Metro is being developed as a joint venture between the Central and State governments, each contributing 20% of the project cost. The remaining 60% will be financed through soft loans from international lenders, backed by sovereign guarantees. The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) will contribute the state’s share of ₹3,497 crore.
Once operational, the Vijayawada Metro is expected to transform the city’s transportation landscape, offering an efficient, eco-friendly transit solution while spurring economic activity and infrastructure development along its corridors.
