Thiruvananthapuram: A controversy over the alleged misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create a deepfake video targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached the Kerala Police, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeking immediate legal action and a detailed investigation into those allegedly involved in creating and circulating the content.

Kerala BJP State Social Media Convener Abhijith Radhakrishnan Nair submitted a complaint to the State Police Chief, demanding the registration of an FIR and action against those responsible for allegedly creating and sharing the video through social media platforms.

The complaint alleged that a Facebook account operating under the name Kaippadi Ansari circulated the video after manipulating original visuals linked to the G7 summit.

According to the complaint, AI technology was allegedly used to create a fabricated video showing world leaders in a manner that was insulting to the Prime Minister, with offensive remarks added before it was widely circulated online.

The BJP said such deepfake campaigns should not be treated merely as political criticism, arguing that they involve the deliberate creation of false content intended to mislead the public and undermine trust in institutions.

“Artificial intelligence cannot be allowed to become a tool for spreading lies and attacking constitutional positions,” Abhijith said, adding that such activities pose a serious threat to democratic discourse.

The complaint sought action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, along with immediate removal of the alleged video from social media platforms.

The BJP representative also submitted copies of the alleged video and other digital evidence to the police. He said those behind the alleged deepfake must be identified and strictly punished to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The complaint comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of AI-generated content to create misleading images and videos. Political parties across the country have raised concerns over deepfakes being used to influence public opinion and spread misinformation.

The Kerala BJP said it would extend full cooperation to the investigation and urged authorities to act swiftly to send a strong message against the misuse of technology.
