Women engineers are playing an increasingly important role in the UAE’s energy and water sectors, contributing to projects linked to renewable energy, desalination and infrastructure planning, according to Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

The company highlighted the contribution of female engineers and technical specialists while marking International Women in Engineering Day 2026, which this year carries the theme “Engineering Intelligence”.

EWEC said women are involved across a wide range of operations, including renewable energy development, water desalination, system planning, grid management and data science.

According to the company, women account for around 25 per cent of its workforce, with one-third of them employed in engineering and advanced technical positions.

The company said female engineers are helping improve forecasting capabilities, strengthen electricity and water networks and support the development of smarter operating systems across Abu Dhabi.

Their work contributes to several national initiatives, including the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035, the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.

EWEC said it continues to invest in female talent through mentoring programs, leadership development opportunities and specialised technical training.

The training covers areas including renewable energy, desalination technologies, grid reliability and system operations.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to increasing women's participation in engineering and technical careers, saying their expertise remains important to the country's long-term sustainability goals.

As the UAE expands renewable energy projects and low-carbon infrastructure, EWEC said women engineers will continue contributing to innovation, efficiency and energy sector development.
