UN's Global Refugee Forum to take stock of global refugee crises
text_fieldsLondon: The United Nations is holding the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) in Geneva to take stock of the displacement of people and increasing refugee crises across the globe. The forum, which started on December 13 and is going to end on December 15, happens at a time when the Gaza conflict goes on, which has displaced some 1.9 million people, Arab News reported.
However, refugee crises have been in the World even before the recent breakout in Gaza. People were being displaced from their homes due to various issues, including conflicts, crises and climate catastrophes in recent times since World War II.
According to statistics, more than 114 million people are being displaced, compared to 75 million in 2019, the pre-Covid era. Experts say that the refugee situation has reached record levels. The current situation resulted from conflicts in Ukraine, Syria and the Sahel, the severe drought in Africa's Horn and economic crises in Lebanon, Venezuela, etc.
On Wednesday, the opening day of the forum, it mainly focused on the Palestinian crisis. The war here, which started on October 7, has displaced around 85 per cent of Gaza people, Arab News reports. On the day, the forum called for an immediate ceasefire and warned that unending conflict here would only add to the number of people displaced globally.
The forum said that there was a major human catastrophe unfolding in Gaza, and the UN Security Council had failed to stop the crises there. The forum was pointing a veiled finger at the US veto motion over the ceasefire.
