New Delhi: India is set to face an intense heatwave over the next two weeks, with temperatures expected to rise sharply across several regions, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The IMD has warned that temperatures may exceed 45°C in multiple states, with some areas likely to approach 48°C. The department indicated that India could become one of the hottest regions globally during this period.

Experts attribute the conditions to a persistent high-pressure system over the subcontinent, commonly referred to as a “heat dome,” which traps hot air and raises surface temperatures. The situation is further aggravated by dry, hot westerly winds and a delay in pre-monsoon rainfall. Lack of cloud cover is also contributing to increased solar heating of the land.

States expected to be most affected include Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, where heatwave conditions are likely to intensify. Urban areas may experience higher temperatures due to the urban heat island effect, driven by dense construction and limited green cover. In rural areas, open land is expected to absorb heat during the day and retain it at night, resulting in elevated night-time temperatures.

The IMD has issued heatwave warnings and advised precautionary measures. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to heatstroke, dehydration and other health issues. People have been advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, wear light clothing and maintain adequate hydration.

The heatwave is also expected to impact agriculture and power consumption. Crops such as wheat could be affected, while increased use of cooling systems may lead to a rise in electricity demand, putting pressure on power supply and increasing the risk of outages in some areas.

Some regions may receive isolated thunderstorms and rainfall, which could bring slight relief.
