One of Lebanon's first female doctors, Dr. Saniya Habboub honoured by Google Doodle
text_fieldsDUBAI: Google, on June 10 is celebrating the life of Dr. Saniya Habboub, a Lebanese medical pioneer who became one of the country's first female doctors. This day marks her graduation from medical school in the United States in 1931.
This inspiring doctor who was whose feat encouraged countless other girls and women in Lebanon to seek an education, graduated from Women's Medical College in Pennsylvania in gynecology and obstetrics.
In honor of her success, the university invited a Lebanese historian and a professor at Princeton University to give an opening speech on her graduation day, Arab News reported
Habboub thanked the school and awarded scholarships in her name to future students.
After returning to Beirut in 1933, she began a practice in her neighborhood called Bab Idris. Habboub is also the co-founder of the Lebanese Red Crescent Association and a board member of the Muslim Orphan's Home, Young Women's Muslim Association and Maqassed Hospital.
After 50 years of dedicated medical service, she was awarded the Health Medal of Merit in 1982 by the Lebanese government and a street in Beirut was named after her.
