Rare celestial event: Moon and Venus visible together
text_fieldsOn a rare occasion, the Moon and Venus lined up in conjunction on Friday. Many across the world were able to witness the night sky occurrence.
Venus is the brightest planet in our solar system. It was seen as a dot while the moon was seen in its crescent shape. They aligned in an almost symmetrical path.
The two celestial bodies remained in the same field of vision until Venus slowly moved away from the Moon and became hidden behind it. The position of Venus and the moon also created an illusion that they are becoming closer to one another.
NASA shared an image and tweeted: "Look westward to find the Moon as a beautiful slim crescent this evening after sunset, hanging just below blazing-bright Venus. Tomorrow evening, look west again to spot the Moon once more, this time shining from above Venus."
The US space agency also urged people to click and share the photos. People from various parts of the world including Kolkata posted photos.
"Venus and Moon will be involved in an event known as a conjunction when they would "appear" to come very close to each other to an observer from the planet. In effect they would be along the same line of sight (but still far away from each other). Enjoy this celestial event!" wrote the Astronomical Society of India Outreach and Education.
