Victory of public sentiment
text_fieldsAfter eleven days of marathon deliberations, the Congress High Command has finally chosen V.D. Satheesan to assume the office of the Chief Minister of Kerala. He is set to be sworn in on Monday, May 18. This announcement brings a weary conclusion to the bitter disputes over the chief minister's post that have raged across Kerala and Delhi over the past eleven days, a conflict that cast a long, sombre shadow over the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) otherwise historic electoral triumph. The electorate, moved by a wave of anti-incumbency and a rejection of the politics of social polarisation, handed the UDF a formidable mandate. Yet, the spectacle of this hard-won majority being squandered at the altar of factional feuds and personal ambitions has left democratic observers in a state of profound disenchantment. Having forsaken a decade of Left rule to entrust the UDF with the reins of governance, the public scarcely anticipated that the scramble for the Chief Minister’s mantle would devolve into such a fierce and protracted struggle.
Setting aside their quintessential factionalism and internal discord, the UDF approached the electorate as a singularly cohesive force. It was a strategy steered with considerable finesse by V.D. Satheesan. However, in the wake of their resounding victory, the internecine scramble for power within the Congress came to be perceived by the public not merely as a partisan squabble, but as a cynical stratagem to hijack the popular will through organisational muscle. This perceived betrayal prompted a sharp outcry from the common man, civil society, and the intelligentsia alike. It is, therefore, commendable that the Congress High Command, albeit belatedly, demonstrated the sagacity to acknowledge this sentiment. The press conference held by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal following the announcement of V.D. Satheesan’s appointment was marked by dignity, conveying a clear message that the party would henceforth move in lockstep, transcending its historical divides. The onus now falls upon V.D. Satheesan, as Chief Minister, to ensure that this promise of unity is realised in its fullest measure.
It marks a new chapter in Kerala’s political landscape as V.D. Satheesan is assuming the office of Chief Minister. One may reasonably expect that the same tenacity and commitment grounded on empirical substance he displayed as Leader of the Opposition—both within the hallowed halls of the Assembly and upon the public stage—can be expected to serve as the bedrock of his administration. Kerala anticipates more than a mere rotation of power; it yearns for governance devoted to public welfare, fortified by a political culture rooted in democratic values and unwavering secularism. A multitude of marginalised communities, long denied justice, cast their ballots for the UDF in a profound longing for transformation. As the new administration stands in defence of their rights, it is certain that the undue interference of communal chieftains and the ethnocentric propaganda of those who seek to sow the seeds of hatred will rear their heads. Indeed, the vitriol has already begun, with detractors seeking to paint even his elevation to the premiership in communal hues. To transcend these provocations and emerge as the authentic voice of the disenfranchised and the common man must be the new Chief Minister’s primary endeavour. The new government must possess the fortitude to maintain a disciplined distance from those forces seeking to fracture Kerala’s social tapestry. Satheesan’s appointment is, in itself, a reflection of the public’s heartfelt embrace of his secular convictions—a stinging rebuttal to those who sought to cling to power through communal polarisation. Therefore, he bears a formidable responsibility to sustain this popular mandate at every turn and to preside over a cabinet unblemished by the stains of sectarianism.
Kerala today seeks a statesman who stands above the narrow sentiments of caste and creed, viewing every citizen through the lens of equality. This era demands development and vigilance. May V.D. Satheesan succeed in delivering an administration that is incorruptible, transparent, and just. Let us look forward to a renewed Kerala, where democracy finds its truest meaning and hatred is dispelled. Madhyamam extends its most sincere felicitations and best wishes to the new Chief Minister.
