Dalit men attacked for attempting temple entry in Rajasthan’s Churu
text_fieldsTension gripped Sadasar village in Rajasthan’s Churu district after a group of Dalit men was assaulted by caste-Hindu men for trying to enter a temple during a religious procession on Sunday evening.
The incident took place after the conclusion of a ‘Bhagwat Katha.’ As the ‘shobha yatra’ moved from the recital venue toward a nearby temple, 19-year-old Kanaram Meghwal and a few others attempted to enter and offer prayers. According to the FIR lodged by Meghwal, they were stopped and attacked by villagers, including Surdas Swami, Shankarlal, Himmat Kumar, and Anil.
The complaint states that the accused prevented the men from entering the temple on the basis of their caste. When the youths protested against the discrimination, they were abused and beaten.
Meghwal claimed that Shankarlal struck his hand with a stick, causing him to fall and suffer injuries. The FIR also records that the accused threatened the crowd, shouting, “No Dalit will be allowed to enter the temple.”
Following the assault, members of the Dalit community staged a protest outside the police station, demanding strict action against the accused.
Police officials said forces have been deployed in the village to maintain peace. They assured that the case would be investigated fairly and that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
