Watch: Transgender employees of Kochi Metro telling the world how to treat them
text_fieldsAs Kochi Metro began its commercial service on Monday, the presence of 23 transgender employees in the project is the specialty that has been hailed the most on social media.
A video uploaded on the Facebook page of Kerala government’s Information and Public Relations Department, shows the transgender employees lauding the authorities for taking a step towards a more inclusive society.
This inspiring step taken by the government and the KMRL is appreciative. Even though this decision was celebrated and received applause, the new recruits have a message for the metro travelers.
The video is a message for the passengers as well as for the people who raise their eyebrows. The employees say they don’t want the passengers look at them with disgust or pity when they see them working at metro stations.
"We are no different from others and we too have their own ambitions. It’s our job and nothing more."
"I want you to look at me, and just see a person doing a job," an employee makes an impassioned plea in the video.
Kochi is the first metro and the first state-owned company in India to “officially” offer employment to a large number of transgenders with the aim of uplifting the marginalized community. The video has already garnered over a million views.
