GAZA CITY: Nine were children among 20 people, who were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, amid continuing attack by the Israeli force at the Masjidul Aqsa in Jerusalem.

Israel claimed it was retaliating rocket launching by Hamas targeting Israel. Hamas is said to have launched rockets attacks after the expiration of its deadline to Israel, demanding stand down forces from the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Earlier on Monday tensions at the compound, the third holiest in Islam which is also revered by Jews escalated with more than 300 Palestinians wounded when Israeli police stormed the mosque, firing rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas.

The UN Security Council held an urgent meeting on the unrest in Jerusalem, as world leaders urged the de-escalation of the tensions.

New confrontations broke out between Palestinians and Israeli police in parts of East Jerusalem on Sunday, including in Sheikh Jarrah and outside the walled Old City, as well as in Haifa, a mixed Arab-Jewish city in northern Israel at the height of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday expressed "serious concerns" to his Israeli counterpart about violent clashes in Jerusalem sparked by planned evictions of Palestinians from East Jerusalem, the White House said in a statement.
