YouTube to let creators make AI-generated shorts using their own likeness
text_fieldsYouTube plans to allow creators to make AI-generated Shorts using their own likeness as part of a broader push to integrate artificial intelligence across the platform in 2026, CEO Neal Mohan said on Wednesday.
In a blog post, Mohan said creators would soon be able to “create a Short using your own likeness,” along with producing games through simple text prompts and experimenting with music. While he did not share technical details, the feature appears similar to OpenAI’s Sora app, which allows users to generate videos of themselves using text prompts.
Mohan acknowledged concerns among creators about heavier reliance on AI but stressed that the technology would not replace human creativity. “Throughout this evolution, AI will remain a tool for expression, not a replacement,” he said.
The YouTube CEO did not explain how AI-powered game creation or music experimentation would work. He also announced changes to Shorts, including new formats that will allow users to post images, similar to Instagram Reels. These image-based shorts will be shared directly in subscribers’ feeds.
YouTube is also shifting focus to television screens, which Mohan described as a key growth area. The company plans to launch fully customisable multiview features and more than 10 specialised YouTube TV plans covering sports, entertainment, and news.
The creator economy will remain a priority in 2026, Mohan said, with new ways for creators to earn money. These include expanded shopping and brand deal tools facilitated by YouTube, as well as new fan funding features such as Jewels and gifts to complement Super Chat.
YouTube also plans to expand its Shopping affiliate programme and introduce in-app checkout, allowing viewers to buy products without leaving the platform.
