Binoy Viswam, MP writes to PM against sending Indian labourers for low-paying jobs to Israel amid war
text_fieldsNew Delhi: In a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior CPI-M leader and Member of Parliament, Binoy Viswam, has voiced his protest against the Indian government's decision to send 100,000 Indian workers to Israel amidst the ongoing conflict with Palestine.
Viswam expressed deep reservations about the move, citing the volatile situation in the region with over 10,000 Palestinians reported dead in the Gaza Strip and 1,400 Israelis dead. He questioned the government's commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens, raising concerns about sending Indian workers into a conflict zone.
The MP criticized the decision to send workers to do low-paying jobs in Israel, emphasizing that they are being driven abroad to escape poverty and unemployment at home under the current government. He condemned the use of the destitution of fellow citizens as a means to address domestic issues.
Highlighting also India's historical support for the Palestinian cause against Israeli occupation, Viswam underscored the potential damage to India's reputation in the Global South. He urged Prime Minister Modi not to endanger the lives of Indian citizens by involving them in a war zone and to maintain the country's traditional support for Palestine.
The letter comes at a critical juncture as tensions escalate in the Israel-Gaza conflict, and the international community continues to call for a ceasefire. The Indian government is yet to respond to Viswam's plea, and the issue is likely to draw attention and debate within the Indian political landscape.
