India crosses 1 billion tonne coal output for second year in a row
text_fieldsIndia has achieved coal production of 1 billion tonnes for the second consecutive year, reaching the milestone on March 20, according to the Press Information Bureau.
The achievement reflects sustained efforts across the coal sector and highlights the country’s focus on strengthening energy self-reliance while ensuring a steady fuel supply to key industries.
Officials said the consistent production levels have helped meet rising energy demand and supported the power sector in maintaining adequate coal stocks at thermal power plants.
The Ministry of Coal said the milestone is the result of coordinated planning and improved execution across the coal value chain. Enhanced coordination has helped maintain a stable supply and support economic activity.
The ministry added that it is continuing efforts to ensure a stable and transparent system for coal production and distribution through policy measures, performance monitoring, and stakeholder engagement.
These efforts are aligned with the government’s broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aimed at strengthening the country’s energy framework and boosting domestic production capacity for long-term growth.
Meanwhile, data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed that the index of eight core infrastructure industries rose by 2.3 percent in February compared to a year earlier.
Officials also noted that thermal power plants currently hold around 53.41 million tonnes of coal, sufficient for about 23 days of consumption. Additional reserves are being built at mining pitheads as a precaution amid ongoing uncertainties linked to the situation in West Asia.
