Uttar Pradesh’s Sarnath gets UNESCO World Heritage status

New Delhi: The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking a significant recognition of India's cultural and spiritual heritage.
The inscription was announced during the ongoing 48th session of the World Heritage Committee being held in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29. The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO confirmed the inclusion of Sarnath on the prestigious list.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the inscription celebrates India's rich heritage and will inspire people across the world to connect with Buddha's message of wisdom, compassion and harmony.
Sarnath holds immense importance in Buddhist history as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma and establishing the Buddhist Sangha.
The site is also home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, discovered at Sarnath and adopted as India's National Emblem. The inclusion of Sarnath on the World Heritage List recognises its historical significance and its enduring message of peace and non-violence.
India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Vishal V Sharma, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the World Heritage Centre for the recognition.
He said Sarnath continues to inspire millions of Buddhists worldwide and encourages values such as truth, non-violence, mindful living and responsible global citizenship.
