A major fire erupted on the ninth floor of Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode on Saturday morning, officials from the Fire and Rescue Services said.

The blaze was reported around 9.15 a.m. in the C-block of the hospital.

Officials confirmed that there were no injuries or casualties.

The fire broke out on a floor that housed air-conditioning panels, and no patients were present there. Maintenance work was underway at the time of the incident, an official said.

Hospital staff immediately began efforts to control the fire. Fire and Rescue Services personnel soon joined them. Five fire tenders were deployed to put out the flames.

As a safety measure, patients on the seventh and eighth floors of the C-block were evacuated. According to officials, the fire was fully extinguished by around 10 a.m.

Fire officers suspect that the blaze may have started from the air-conditioning panels. A detailed inspection is currently underway to determine the exact cause.

Kozhikode MP M. K. Raghavan visited the hospital and said, “The fire is completely doused, and no untoward incident has been reported. Luckily, no casualties were reported.”

The office of Health Minister Veena George said she had spoken with hospital authorities. “Directions have been given to the Kozhikode Medical College to keep ICU and ventilator facilities ready if any patients are required to be moved,” a statement said.
