UAE to leave Opec and Opec+ from May 1

The UAE announced on April 28 that it will exit the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) and the wider Opec+ alliance, with the decision taking effect on May 1, 2026.
The move follows a review of the country’s production policy and capacity after more than six decades of membership in the group.
Officials said the UAE remains a reliable supplier of oil, producing some of the world’s most cost-competitive and lower-carbon barrels, which it sees as contributing to global economic growth and efforts to reduce emissions.
In its statement, the UAE said short-term volatility, including disruptions in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, continues to affect supply dynamics.
However, it added that underlying trends indicate sustained growth in global energy demand over the long term.
The country said it has invested to meet changing demand efficiently and responsibly, with a focus on maintaining stability in supply, ensuring affordability and supporting sustainability within the global energy system.
