Complaints filed against TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee in Bengal
text_fieldsKolkata: Two separate complaints were filed on Saturday against Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee at police stations in two different districts of West Bengal over separate allegations.
The first complaint was lodged at the Siliguri Cyber Police Station under the Siliguri Metropolitan Police in Darjeeling district.
In the complaint, businessman Sanjay Kumar Singhal alleged that Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, made statements during several campaign rallies before the recently concluded Assembly elections that allegedly incited post-poll violence.
The complainant stated that the remarks made by the Trinamool Congress leader during election rallies had the potential to create political hostility and urged the police to conduct a detailed investigation and take appropriate action under the law.
The second complaint was filed at Bishnupur Police Station in South 24 Parganas district by BJP leader Avijit Das, also known as Bobby. Das had contested against Abhishek Banerjee from the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in both the 2019 and 2024 elections.
In his complaint, Das accused the Diamond Harbour MP of alleged corruption in the distribution of relief materials to cyclone-affected people after Cyclone Amphan struck West Bengal in May 2020. South 24 Parganas was among the worst-affected districts during the cyclone.
Das has requested the district police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee is scheduled to face questioning by investigating agencies in three separate cases over three consecutive days from June 14 to 16.
On June 14, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary will appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bhavani Bhavan for questioning in connection with a case involving alleged mismatches in the signatures of some party legislators on a key resolution related to the appointment of opposition leaders in the state Assembly.
This will be the second round of questioning in the case, as Banerjee had already undergone extensive questioning on Thursday.
On June 15, he is scheduled to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Salt Lake office in Kolkata in connection with the multi-crore cash-for-school-job case. The ED had issued a notice to him on June 3.
On June 16, Banerjee is expected to appear again at the CID headquarters for questioning in a case related to allegations of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the recent Assembly elections.
The CID served him a notice in the matter on Thursday evening.
