Women’s T20 World Cup: Scotland beat Ireland by 40 runs for historic 1st win
text_fieldsManchester: Captain Kathryn Bryce led from the front with a brilliant half-century before spinners Kirstie Gordon and Katherine Fraser produced three-wicket hauls as Scotland secured a historic 40-run victory over Ireland in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup opener at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Defending a competitive 161/5, built around a match-winning 106-run partnership between sisters Kathryn and Sarah Bryce, Scotland delivered a disciplined bowling performance to bowl Ireland out for 121 in 19.1 overs and register their first-ever victory in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Ireland’s chase suffered an early blow when Kathryn struck in the opening over, taking a sharp return catch to dismiss Alana Dalzell. However, Amy Hunter and captain Gaby Lewis steadied the innings, taking Ireland to 35/1 at the end of the powerplay.
Hunter looked in excellent touch, finding boundaries through confident drives and pulls as she scored 39 off 36 balls. Along with Lewis, she kept Ireland’s hopes alive, but Scotland tightened their grip through spin.
The breakthrough came in the eighth over when Fraser dismissed Lewis after the Irish captain was stumped by Sarah Bryce while attempting to advance down the pitch.
With the required run rate increasing, Hunter continued to battle but Fraser struck again, bowling the opener with a delivery that went through her attempted reverse sweep.
That wicket sparked a collapse as Ireland lost momentum. Gordon then produced a stunning 13th over, removing Rebecca Stokell and Leah Paul off successive deliveries before bowling Alice Tector to complete a sensational three-wicket burst.
Ireland slipped from 68/3 to 70/6 in the space of six balls as Scotland took full control of the contest.
Orla Prendergast tried to revive the chase with a fighting 33 off 23 balls, including four fours and a six, while Arlene Kelly added 15. However, the rising required rate and regular wickets proved too much for Ireland.
Gordon finished with impressive figures of 3/16 from four overs, while Fraser matched her with 3/18. Kathryn Bryce completed an outstanding all-round performance with 2/19 after her 60 off 39 balls in the first innings.
Earlier, Scotland’s innings was rebuilt by the Bryce sisters after early setbacks reduced them to 37/2. Sarah Bryce narrowly missed a half-century, scoring 49, while Kathryn smashed 60 as their century partnership lifted Scotland to a challenging total.
The win gave Scotland a dream start to their campaign and ended their long wait for a breakthrough victory at the Women’s T20 World Cup.
