Opendoor shuts India operations, cuts 250 jobs, pivots fully to AI
text_fieldsNew Delhi: US-based real estate technology company Opendoor is shutting down its operations in India, resulting in the layoff of around 250 employees across its offices in the country. The move marks the final phase of the company’s restructuring initiative, branded as “Opendoor 2.0”, which is aimed at overhauling its business model through extensive use of artificial intelligence.
The decision was announced by Opendoor Chief Executive Officer Carr Nejatian through social media. According to the company, the growing integration of AI into core operations has significantly reduced the need for large operational teams in India. Tasks previously handled directly by employees across multiple departments have increasingly been consolidated and automated under the new strategy.
Opendoor said it has already reorganised several functions and established smaller AI-driven customer teams in the United States, reducing dependence on its India-based workforce. As a result, the company is winding up its presence in the country and closing operations that had been supporting its business from India.
Employees affected by the layoffs will receive severance packages, transition support and outplacement services aimed at helping them secure new jobs. The company also indicated that a small number of employees would remain temporarily to oversee the transfer of critical functions before the shutdown process is completed.
The restructuring reflects a broader shift in the company’s operational priorities, with customer-facing services and key functions being moved back to the United States in an effort to deliver faster services.
Opendoor had established offices in major Indian technology hubs including Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru beginning in 2022. Those offices are now set to cease operations completely.
The company has maintained that the layoffs are not linked to employee performance. Instead, they stem from a sweeping transformation of its business structure, driven by automation and artificial intelligence, a move that has now brought Opendoor’s India chapter to an abrupt end.
