The number of passengers carried in the last five months by domestic airlines reached 636.07 lakhs, marking a substantial 36% increase compared to the same period in 2022 when 467.37 lakhs passengers were carried.

Data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revealed a significant surge in air traffic in India during the period of January-May 2023.

In May 2023 alone, Indian domestic airlines carried 132.14 lakh passengers, showing a notable year-on-year growth rate of 36.10% and a monthly growth rate of 15.24%. This indicates a strong rebound in air travel demand, reflecting a recovery in the aviation sector.

The DGCA report also highlights that the overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic flights in May 2023 remained impressively low at just 0.44%. Notably, Go First suspended its operations on May 3, which might have impacted the cancellation rate to some extent.

Furthermore, during May 2023, scheduled domestic airlines received a total of 556 passenger-related complaints. However, the number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month stood at a relatively low rate of 0.42. It is worth mentioning that a majority of the complaints were from passengers of Go First.

The substantial growth in air traffic and the relatively low cancellation rate indicate a positive trajectory for the Indian aviation industry. The steady recovery in passenger numbers signifies increasing confidence among travelers and a revival of the overall air travel sector in the country.
