Pyongyang: In a crackdown on Western media, North Korea has threatened to send parents to prison if their children are caught watching foreign films or TV shows.

According to Radio Free Asia, parents will be sent to labour camps for six months and the children will serve five years of imprisonment. Earlier, parents were let off with a serious warning. Now, no one will be shown mercy if children are exposed to Western culture.

If anyone is found performing like a South Korean, they and their parents will be sent to prison for six months. Smuggling Western media across the border could end in execution.

Parents are also under more pressure to educate children "properly" in socialist ideals. They received severe warnings at weeklyInminban - compulsory neighbourhood watch unit meetings.

A source told Radio Free Asia that the host of the meeting emphasised parental responsibility and said that education for children begins at home. "If parents do not educate their children from moment to moment, they will dance and sing of capitalism and become anti-socialists."

The North Korean regime is concerned that the young population of the country is getting exposed to the values and norms of other countries. In 2020, the government banned foreign information and influence because South Korean shows were becoming more and more popular in the country.

In 2022, two high school students were executed for watching South Korean and American movies.
