Centre rolls out AI, computational thinking for classes 3 to 8
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday launched a new curriculum on artificial intelligence and computational thinking for students from Classes 3 to 8, marking the formal introduction of structured AI education within the school system.
Describing the move as a “transformative step” towards future-ready learning at the start of the academic year, Pradhan said the initiative aims to integrate AI education at scale across schools. The curriculum is supported by structured modules, detailed teacher handbooks, and comprehensive student assessment frameworks, ensuring early and systematic exposure to emerging technologies.
Aligned with the vision of “AI for Education, AI in Education”, the programme seeks to promote augmented learning by fostering critical thinking, design orientation, and a culture of innovation among students.
Highlighting India’s growing global recognition in technology-driven computing, Pradhan said the curriculum would enable students to actively engage with and contribute to the digital future. He added that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research (NCERT) and Training are institutionalising this framework to build a more adaptive, technology-integrated education ecosystem.
The CBSE had earlier constituted an expert panel to develop the curriculum. Until now, AI was offered as a 15-hour skill module from Class 6 and as an optional subject for students in Classes 9 to 12.
