Beijing: The Great Wall of China, a historic and colossal fortification spread across the northern expanse of China, has faced damage caused by workers attempting to create a shortcut.

This architectural marvel, symbolising China's rich history, spans rugged mountains, deserts, and plains. Built over centuries and dynasties, it serves as both a defence against invaders and a testament to the country's enduring civilisation. The damage occurred when two workers employed an excavator to create a shortcut through the wall.

According to reports, a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman were arrested in the northern province of Shanxi on August 24, following the incident. Their objective was to widen an existing cavity in an effort to reduce their travel distance.

State broadcaster CCTV has revealed that the suspects caused "irreversible damage" to a section of the Ming-era wall, which was described as a "relatively intact" portion holding significant research value. Images on Chinese state TV depicted the aftermath, showing a dusty road cut through a lengthy, elevated segment of the ancient barrier.

These photographs were shared by the police department in Youyu County, Shanxi province, which also stated that the damaged section of the Great Wall belongs to the 32nd Great Wall established during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

The Great Wall has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1987 and consists of numerous sections stretching thousands of kilometres in total. Construction commenced in the third century BC and spanned centuries, serving as a testament to China's enduring history and captivating millions of visitors from around the world who visit to witness its grandeur and historical significance.
