Meta to replace fact-checkers with community notes in the U.S.
text_fieldsMeta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a significant shift in its content moderation strategy in the United States.
The company plans to phase out its third-party fact-checking program, replacing it with a community-driven initiative similar to X’s (formerly Twitter) Community Notes system.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's Founder and CEO, shared the update on social media, stating, “We’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X, starting in the US.”
Meta’s fact-checking program currently collaborates with about 80 organisations worldwide, including AFP, to provide verified information in 26 languages.
These fact-checks have been utilised across Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram to combat misinformation. However, the transition to a community notes model marks a departure from reliance on external partners, aiming to engage users directly in content moderation efforts.
