‘2-state solution for Palestine’: BRICS resolves at New Delhi

New Delhi: The BRICS grouping has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving international conflicts through dialogue, consultation and diplomacy, while backing greater representation for India and Brazil in the United Nations Security Council.

The joint declaration was adopted by consensus of the member countries at the BRICS summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally releasing the document. The consensus amid multiple international conflicts was seen as a diplomatic boost for India.

China and Russia, the two BRICS members that are permanent members of the UN Security Council, reiterated their support for the aspirations of India and Brazil for greater participation in the UN and the Council. The declaration called for Security Council reform to provide greater representation to developing countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

BRICS expressed deep concern over conflicts in West Asia and called for humanitarian assistance to Gaza and a two-state solution for Palestine. It also stressed the need to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers amid military tensions in the region.

The grouping urged BRICS countries to increase the use of local currencies in trade with one another, a move aimed at reducing dependence on the US dollar. It also backed efforts to find practical solutions for cross-border payments.

The declaration supported reform of the World Trade Organisation and an open, transparent global trading system, while expressing concern over unilateral tariff measures inconsistent with WTO rules.

BRICS strongly condemned terrorism and specifically denounced the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir. It called for perpetrators to be brought to justice and stressed that terrorism should not be associated with any religion or nationality. It also condemned unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law.
