Lost and found! AI to programme robots to help find lost items
text_fieldsArtificial intelligence is forging ahead with changing lives and researchers have now developed an AI technology to programme robots that can help people locate essential items like phones and medicines.
This new piece of tech can be used to find lost items. People who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases like dementia will benefit from this. Dementia patients regularly forget the location of everyday objects because the disease impairs memory, causes disability, and even confuses them. Researchers have developed AI technology to create artificial memory that can improve the quality of life.
The team used an object-detection algorithm to programme the robot. The machine is able to detect, track, and keep a memory log of objects in its camera view through stored video. It is also able to distinguish one object from another. It can also record the date and time a specific object enters or leaves its view.
The team has also created a graphical interface that can be used to record which objects the user wants to be tracked. These can be searched via a smartphone app or a computer. In the future, people can also use it to find any misplaced items.
A researcher at the University of Waterloo in Canada, Ali Ayub, said that the long-term impact of this AI tech is "really exciting" and "a user can be involved not just with a companion robot but a personalised companion robot that can give them more independence."
