New Delhi: In a first, the Indian football team qualified for the FIFAe Nations Cup 2022, the esports showpiece event scheduled to stage from July 27 to July 30 in Denmark's Copenhagen, PTI reported.
In the FIFAe Nations Series 2022 qualifiers, the Indian efootball team defeated the Korea Republic and Malaysia.
The Indian efootball team was born after the All India Football Federation signed the participation agreement with FIFA for the FIFAe Nations Series 2021. India was among 60 countries to participate in the Middle East & Africa Zone. In 2021, India finished 3rd in the zone and couldn't enter the FIFAe Nations playoffs.
During the 2021 season, India finished 22 in the global ranking, above heavyweights such as Italy, Argentina and Spain.
However, for the 2022 season, India was placed in Asia/Oceania region and was awarded a spot in the Play-Ins. This would end up in direct qualification to the Playoffs, PTI reports.
In the play-ins stage, India played 32 games across four match weeks and got 12 wins, 11 losses and nine draws, successfully qualifying for the Playoffs by finishing second in the Consistency Points chart. India had also reached the highest global ranking of 19 too, during this period.
