Saudi Arabia re-elected to International Atomic Energy Agency Board
text_fieldsSaudi Arabia has been elected as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors for a new term extending until 2027. The election took place during the agency’s 69th General Conference in Vienna.
The IAEA Board of Governors, composed of 35 member states, plays a central role in shaping international nuclear policy. It is tasked with overseeing sensitive matters such as safeguards and the verification of the peaceful use of nuclear technology under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The board also reviews the agency’s financial statements, programs and budget, making recommendations to the General Conference.
Saudi Arabia’s election highlights what observers describe as growing international recognition of the Kingdom’s constructive role in promoting nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The move also reflects Riyadh’s broader efforts to strengthen global cooperation in developing nuclear technology for sustainable development and peace.
This marks Saudi Arabia’s second consecutive term on the board, having previously served from 2022 to 2024. Analysts note that the reappointment positions the Kingdom to play an influential role in shaping discussions on nuclear energy at a time of increasing global interest in clean and reliable power sources.
