Chennai sees rise in fever cases, dengue infections

Chennai and its suburban areas have reported a sharp increase in fever cases in recent weeks, with viral infections and dengue spreading across several localities.
More than 2,000 people reported fever symptoms in the city and suburbs over the past 10 days, with dengue confirmed in 140 cases.
Around 4,500 fever cases were recorded in August, of which 160 were diagnosed as dengue.
The latest figures have raised concern among health professionals as the number of dengue cases reported in just 10 days is approaching the total recorded during the previous month.
Adyar, Anna Nagar and Valasaravakkam are among the areas reporting relatively high numbers of fever cases. Health authorities and medical teams are monitoring the situation as patients continue to seek treatment at government and private hospitals with fever, body pain, cough and other symptoms.
Doctors said respiratory viruses including Influenza A, Rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also circulating in the city. Viral fever can spread among family members, particularly in crowded households when an infected person does not take adequate precautions.
Doctors have advised people with fever to consult qualified medical professionals and undergo necessary tests instead of self-medicating. Delayed treatment or taking medicines without medical advice could complicate the condition, particularly in dengue cases.
Residents have been urged to prevent mosquito breeding by removing stagnant water from flowerpots, discarded tyres, containers, terraces and open spaces. Stored water should be covered and containers cleaned regularly. Garbage and other waste should also be cleared frequently from homes, construction sites and surrounding areas.
People have also been advised to use mosquito nets, repellents and protective clothing, especially during early morning and evening hours. Those experiencing persistent fever, severe body pain, vomiting, unusual tiredness, or bleeding symptoms should immediately seek hospital care.
