Saudi Arabia: Jubail city runs world’s largest smart irrigation network
text_fieldsJubail Industrial City is now home to the world’s largest integrated smart irrigation system, a project designed to conserve resources and support Saudi Arabia’s environmental goals, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
According to the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY), the system is operated from a unified control center that manages over 12,200 smart devices and processes around 1.2 million signals each day.
Safar Alnutayfat, RCJY’s operation and maintenance manager, said, “The system serves as a national model aligned with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 for environmental sustainability, advancing digital transformation in resource management, and activating smart cities with high efficiency”.
The smart irrigation network spans more than 11,600 kilometers of pipelines and delivers treated water for irrigation at a rate of about 2.8 million cubic meters per month. By adopting this technology, the commission has reduced operation and maintenance costs by over 35 percent.
Alnutayfat noted that the system is also consistent with the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives. It rationalizes the consumption of natural resources, increases vegetation cover and contributes to combating climate change across the region.
