Makkah hosts world’s largest Qur’an competition

The 46th King Abdulaziz International Competition for Memorising, Reciting and Interpreting the Holy Qur’an began in Makkah on Thursday.
The competition is being held under the patronage of King Salman and organised by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance.
This year’s event has drawn 334 male and female contestants from 133 countries, the largest participation in the competition’s history.
The contest will run until Rabi Al Awwal 6, corresponding to August 19.
The competition aims to encourage young Muslims to memorise, understand and reflect on the Holy Qur’an, while promoting fair competition among participants from around the world.
It also highlights Saudi Arabia’s role in serving the Qur’an and honouring those who memorise it.
For the first time, independent competitions for female participants will be held at the Makkah Hilton Hotel & Convention.
The male category finals and closing ceremony will take place at the Grand Mosque.
The competition includes five categories and offers total prizes of SR10.26 million, the highest prize pool since the event was launched.
