Kuwait has been re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term with 173 votes, the second-highest tally among the countries elected, its UN envoy said on Tuesday evening.

Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told KUNA that the result represented renewed international confidence in the country.

He said it reflected appreciation for Kuwait’s foreign policy of moderation and balance, its commitment to dialogue and international law, and its adherence to the UN Charter.

Al-Banai congratulated Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the government and the Kuwaiti people. He attributed the result to the political leadership’s guidance and continued support.

The new term would allow Kuwait to build on its council experience and continue supporting multilateral action, international cooperation and humanitarian causes, he said.

Al-Banai described the confidence placed in Kuwait as a responsibility at a time when armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and accompanying violations were placing growing pressure on the international human rights system.

Kuwait would continue constructive dialogue with member states and cooperation with relevant UN mechanisms, he said.

Its priorities would include the rights of women, children and people with disabilities, alongside protecting civilians during armed conflict and ensuring access for humanitarian aid.

The Palestinian cause would remain at the forefront of Kuwait’s concerns, Al-Banai said, citing its support for Palestinians’ legitimate rights, particularly self-determination.

He said the council’s credibility depended on carrying out its responsibilities objectively and fairly, without politicisation, selectivity or double standards. The same standards must apply to everyone without exception.

Al-Banai credited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kuwait’s diplomatic missions for engaging with member states to explain the country’s priorities and commitments.

He thanked the countries that voted for Kuwait and the Asia-Pacific Group for supporting its candidacy.
