Tamil Nadu launches TN SPARK to teach AI, robotics in govt schools
text_fieldsChennai: Exposure to Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital tools is no longer limited to private schools. In a major step to bridge the technological divide, the Tamil Nadu government has launched a pilot programme this academic year to train government school students in AI applications, coding, and interactive online tools.
The initiative, titled Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK), is currently being implemented for students of Classes 6 to 9. It aims to create a tech-savvy generation capable of keeping pace with emerging digital trends, regardless of socio-economic background.
In the first phase, 85 government schools in Coimbatore district have been included, comprising 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. Bilingual textbooks in English and Tamil have been prepared for the new curriculum, with trained mathematics and science teachers conducting the sessions.
Each school has allocated one or two periods per week for TN SPARK classes, using around 880 hi-tech lab computers to deliver the programme. While the initial sessions have been introductory, the syllabus will expand fully from October, following quarterly examinations.
The curriculum covers the foundations of computer science, including algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualisation. It also integrates online educational tools that provide interactive lessons across subjects such as science, geography, anatomy, and languages.
AI modules introduce students to creative applications such as text-to-image generation, text-to-speech, digital art, doodling, translation, and animation. Coding lessons are offered through beginner-friendly platforms like Blockly, Turtle Art, and Scratch, alongside basics of HTML and cyber safety education. Teachers report that students are showing keen interest in these classes, often preferring them over conventional lessons.
Hi-tech labs are being effectively utilised to foster curiosity and enhance learning skills. Officials noted that the programme is designed not only to provide access to advanced technology but also to develop problem-solving abilities and digital literacy, preparing students for future academic and career opportunities.
With TN SPARK, Tamil Nadu is setting a benchmark for integrating advanced technology training into government schools, ensuring that students from all sections of society gain equal exposure to tools shaping the future.
