Kerala senior Congress MLA PT Thomas passes away, at 71
text_fieldsPT Thomas, a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly MLA representing Thrikkakkara constituency at a hospital in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, party sources said. He was 71.
He was under treatment for cancer at Vellore Christian Medical College where he passed away by 10.10 am.
Born in 1950, Thomas began his political career as a worker of the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student outfit of the Congress in Kerala.
He held several positions including state president of the KSU the students wing of the Congress and later Youth Congress during his eventful political career.
He was representing Thrikkakkara constituency in the state assembly. He also represented Thodupuzha constituency twice. He is also a former Member of Parliament who represented the Idukki Lok Sabha constituency. He was the working committee president of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Thomas was noted as an environmentalist sometimes even taking stands at variance with his party's and an author.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death. He said that PT Thomas was a person who always presented issues and made a clear political stand inside and outside the assembly.
"He was a good orator and organiser. The state is losing a notable parliamentarian," said the CM.
