Thiruvananthapuram: A 36-year-old man from Kerala working at a Russian military camp died in a shell attack, The Indian Express reported citing his family.

Sandeep, a native of Nayarangadi at Trikkur panchayat in Thrissur district, had gone to Russia to work at a restaurant in April.

An electrician by profession, he ended up working at a military canteen in the country which is in the midst of a war with Ukraine.

The family said they had lost contact with Sandeep recently.

Sandeep’s cousin, Saran reportedly said that two days ago the family received a message from Russian Malayali association that a person from Thrissur had died in shell attack.

‘Two days ago, we got a message from a Russian Malayali association that a person from Thrissur had died in a shell attack. The victim, according to the message, was working at a Russian military canteen… The association wanted to identify the deceased person. Then, we verified the details and found it was Sandeep,’ Saran was quoted as saying.

“He told us that he was employed in Moscow and had sent one month’s salary home. After one month, he rarely contacted the family and was reportedly taken out of Moscow. We later came to know that he was at the military canteen, which was exposed to attacks from Ukraine forces,” Saran reportedly said.

Sandeep is survived by his father, Chandran, and mother, Valsala who are farm workers.

The family is looking forward to the Indian embassy in Russia to help bring his body home, they said.
