State celebrates ‘Kerala Piravi Dinam’

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala celebrates its 59th formation year on Sunday, 1 November, commonly known as Kerala Piravi Dinam.
The day is celebrated across the State with people donning traditional attires and conducting different socio-cultural programmes. Malayali organizations outside the State also join the celebrations with fervor by conducting different cultural programmes.
Kerala, which was earlier comprised of three independent provinces named Malabar, Cochin and Travancore, was officially formed as a result of the States Reorganisation Act on 1 November 1956, long after India got independence in 1947.
The state is believed to have got its name after its first ruler, Keralian Thamboran, who ruled one of these provinces. It is also said that the name originated from the word 'kera' or the coconut tree that is widely seen in the State.
