Thiruvananthapuram: Around 10 lakh autorickshaw and taxi drivers in the state will go on an indefinite strike from Wednesday midnight onwards seeking fare revision.

The autorickshaw-taxi workers coordination committee leaders took the decision to go on an indefinite strike as a talk between leaders of the Joint Forum of Trade Unions and Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on fare revision failed here on Tuesday.

The talk failed as the government was against the demand of the unions to reduce the maximum distance to be covered with the minimum charge from 1.5 kilometre to 1.25 km.

In a statement, the Union leaders said that no consensus could be reached on the issue of distance that could be covered with the minimum charge. Therefore, the discussion with the Minister failed.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is likely to place the report of Justice Ramachandran Commission recommending a hike in the minimum fare for autorickhaws and taxis before the Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
