Tribes call off stir
text_fieldsKalpetta: Tribesmen under the aegis of the Adivasi Kshema Samiti (AKS), an affiliate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M], Tuesday called off their siege of the collectorate after Tribal Welfare Minister P.K Jayalakshmi offered to address their demands.
"The land would soon be distributed to all the landless tribes. The land distribution to the tribes will be made transparent,” Minister P.K Jayalakshmi told reporters after a reconcilation talks held between the protesters and the Minister.
Hundreds of tribesmen under the aegis of the Adivasi Kshema Samiti (AKS), an affiliate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M], started their indefinite siege of the collectorate on Monday.
AKS had been seeking one acre of land each to all landless tribesmen in the district. The agitation was part of the second phase of the ‘jail fill’ agitation (Jail Nirakkal Samaram) of the organisation.
The protesters’ demands included reinstatement of the Gothra Saradhi project, intended to curb the dropout rate among tribal children; completion of the various housing projects for tribesmen; spot admission for tribal children in Plus Two courses in the nearest higher secondary schools; and waiver of loans.
