Thiruvananthapuram: The state government Monday said it would not impose a ban on ‘Kiss Protest’ organised by a section of people in the State against moral policing.

“In a democracy anyone has the right to organise protests and counter-protests. State will interfere only when it becomes a law and order situation”, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala told reporters here today.

He was replying to the scuffle and sporadic violence that occurred between pro- and anti-kiss protest activists in Kozhikode yesterday.

The State government has no objection to any type of protest organised by anybody, he said. However, he reminded that as per Section 285 of IPC, performing an obscene act in public was an offence.

Government had taken a lenient approach while dealing with the ‘kiss protest’, he said. Government has no plan to ban it, he said, adding, “let them agitate”.
