Parts of Delhi are grappling with a water shortage due to dangerously high ammonia (NH3) levels in the Yamuna River, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) confirmed in an official statement.

Elevated ammonia concentrations exceeding 5.0 ppm have significantly impacted the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, reducing its water production capacity by 25-50%. “As a result, water supply in several areas of the city will be available at low pressure until the situation improves,” the statement noted.

The affected areas include Majnu Ka Tila, ISBT, GPO, NDMC region, ITO, LNJP Hospital, Defence Colony, Greater Kailash, South Extension, Shalimar Bagh, Azadpur, Punjabi Bagh, Model Town, Jahangirpuri, Timarpur, Burari, and parts of South Delhi and the Cantonment area, among others.

The DJB has urged residents to conserve water and has assured that water tankers will be made available on request. Ammonia contamination in the Yamuna River remains a persistent challenge, often disrupting the city's water supply.
