Protest on admission irregularities: Jamia Milia suspends 4 students

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has taken disciplinary action against four students who protested alleged irregularities in the university’s 2026-27 spot admission process, suspending them and barring them from entering the campus.
Those suspended include NSUI office-bearers Dhruv Chauhan, Tabrez Afzal and Ebin Basil, along with another student, Mohammed Jasim. Student organisations have demanded that the action be withdrawn and called for an open discussion on the admission process.
The protests were triggered by allegations that students higher on merit lists were denied admission while lower-ranked candidates were accommodated, with students also alleging manipulation of the Jammu and Kashmir quota. Organisations, including AISA and MSF, claimed that seats were allotted through offline spot admissions on a first-come, first-served basis without prior notice, creating scope for serious irregularities.
Student groups also objected to the removal of PhD scholar Saurabh and others from the campus, warning that the disciplinary measures could disrupt their academic careers.
The university, however, has rejected the allegations and maintained that the admission process was transparent. The Chief Proctor said the students faced disciplinary action because they held the protest at the Central Canteen instead of the designated protest area at Gate No. 18 and obstructed admission counters.
The controversy has also triggered a fresh dispute among student groups. The Fraternity Movement alleged that NSUI activists obstructed SIO members and damaged their flag at the Central Canteen protest site on August 25.
Student organisations have vowed to intensify protests until the suspensions are revoked and greater transparency is ensured in admissions.
