Agartala: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman, the chief of Tipra Motha, recently held a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, just days ahead of the Tripura by-elections scheduled for September 5 in two Tripura assembly segments.

"Shri @PradyotManikyaJi had a fruitful meeting with Hon'ble Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji in Delhi today. They discussed the ongoing talks and the rights and welfare of the indigenous people. It has been the vision of the prime minister to secure the rights and empower the tribals of Tripura and the rest of the country," said BJP's national spokesperson and northeast coordinator Sambit Patra on X, formerly Twitter.

The meeting carries political significance as the CPI(M) recently engaged in discussions with the regional party, seeking its support for the by-elections in the Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats of Tripura's Sepahijala district.

Nonetheless, sources close to Debbarman suggested that the discussions were aligned with the Centre's initiative to engage with regional parties in Tripura, including Tipra Motha, to address constitutional demands raised by the tribal people of Tripura.

Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman is widely recognised as a prominent advocate for tribal rights in Tripura.

"Certainly, it's truly motivating. I'm confident that with Hon'ble Union Home Minister @AmitShah Ji's guidance, a lasting resolution to the challenges experienced by indigenous communities in the North East states will be achieved," wrote Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on X.

In a social media post, the Tipra Motha chief hinted that his party is unlikely to support the CPI(M), which has nominated candidates for the upcoming by-elections.

As the Tipra Motha and Congress have decided not to contest the by-elections, the BJP is poised to face off against the CPI(M).

The Boxanagar constituency by-poll became necessary due to the unfortunate demise of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque. The resignation of Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik as the Dhanpur MLA triggered the by-election for that seat.
