Chennai: Three men convicted for involving in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi left the country on Wednesday morning.

Murugan, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar, freed in November 2022 by the Supreme Court following "satisfactory behaviour" during their time in jail, left for Colombo from Chennai International Airport, NDTV reported.

A team of police officers escorted them to the airport from a special camp in Tiruchirappalli where they had been held after their release from jail.

The island nation has recently granted three men passports.

Of them, Murugan is married to Indian citizen Nalini, who was among the six released in 2022.

Nalini was seen in visuals sitting with her husband at the airport for a few moments before he was taken into the terminal.

An intervention by Sonia Gandhi, the late Prime Minister's widow, spared the life of Nalini and others after they were sentenced to death.

Back then, it emerged that Nalini had been pregnant during the sentencing and her daughter is now a doctor in UK.

Nalini is attempting a reunion with her daughter in UK where Murugan will join them from Sri Lanka, reports said.

The first of the convicts to have been released was Perarivalan, an Indian citizen in May 2022.
