Politician threatens farmer over land dispute in Chhattisgarh, video goes viral
text_fieldsThe city president of the Youth Congress Sheru Aslam in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh threatened a farmer's life over a land dispute. The incident led to controversy after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The farmer in question, Umendra Ram Sahu, lodged a complaint with the local police, alleging that Aslam had tried to forcefully seize half an acre of his farmland through intimidation tactics. In the video that went viral, Aslam is seen allegedly brandishing a firearm while warning Sahu, "If you step foot on this land, I will kill you."
Sahu firmly maintains that the farmland, which is vital for his family's livelihood, rightfully belongs to him. He is afraid because allegations have drawn significant attention to the land dispute.
Aslam, who is currently under investigation for the alleged threats, refutes the accusations as a political conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP. The Youth Congress leader claims that these charges are an attempt to remove him from his position as district president in anticipation of the upcoming elections. "The BJP is using my name and position as part of their conspiracy."
Concerns about the handling of the situation were raised by Upendra Sahu's brother, Bhikham Sahu, who claimed that the Station House Officer organised a meeting with Aslam without his prior knowledge. Pooja Kumar, a senior police officer, confirmed that the land dispute falls under the jurisdiction of Sarkanda's police station. She assured that appropriate measures have been taken, advising both parties to await the finalisation of the land demarcation.
This is not the first time Aslam has been implicated in a land dispute.
The BJP has raised concerns about the state of law and order and Congress accused the BJP of politicising the issue. Sushil Anand, the media in charge of the Congress, defended Aslam, stating, "The BJP is unjustifiably targeting district-level Youth Congress leaders due to a lack of substantive issues." He assured that the police have taken preventive measures and initiated a thorough investigation into the land dispute. He also pledged severe punishments for any individuals found guilty.
