Parliamentary committee head says 'One Nation, One Election' in 2029
text_fieldsPanaji: The BJP has claimed that the proposed "One Nation, One Election" reform, aimed at conducting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously, will be implemented from the 2029 general elections. The assertion was made by PP Chaudhary, BJP MP and chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Bills related to the proposal.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day committee meeting in Goa, Chaudhary said the majority of stakeholders consulted so far had backed the proposal, which he claimed would prevent an estimated economic loss of ₹7 lakh crore caused by frequent elections.
He said the committee also held informal discussions with Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and members of the state Cabinet on the challenges involved in holding simultaneous elections and possible ways to address them.
According to Chaudhary, the committee has already visited Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi as part of its consultations. During these visits, it interacted with constitutional experts, social organisations, educationists and members of the public.
He added that the committee's objective is to develop a framework for simultaneous elections that would be acceptable to all political parties.
