Bengaluru: In the past 15 days, Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district has reported 31 cases of monkey fever, also known as Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD).

Among the infected individuals, 12 are admitted to hospitals, while the others are receiving treatment at home. All cases are reportedly stable, with no serious instances reported so far. The majority of the cases originated from Siddapur taluk.

Monkey fever is transmitted through tick bites, typically found on monkeys, and humans can contract the disease through tick bites or contact with cattle that have been bitten by ticks.

Health authorities are conducting door-to-door awareness programs to educate people about preventive measures, emphasising the heightened risk for those living in and around forested areas.

Dr. Neeraj B, District Health Officer of Uttara Kannada, explained that symptoms of monkey fever, including high fever, severe body ache, headache, redness of eyes, cold, and cough, manifest three to five days after contracting the disease.

As of the latest update, all necessary precautions are being taken, and medical facilities in the district are prepared to handle such cases.

Forest officials have also been enlisted to raise awareness among the public regarding preventive measures against monkey fever.
