Allegations of obstruction and partisanship: Manipur police and Assam rifles clash
text_fieldsImphal: Tensions escalate as Manipur Police file FIR against Assam Rifles personnel for alleged obstruction during a violent incident in Kwakta on August 6.
The clash ensued after the killing of three individuals from the Meitei community, attributed to "suspected Kuki militants." The FIR, lodged by the Phougakchao police station officer, accuses Assam Rifles personnel of obstructing police duties, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation.
A video capturing a heated confrontation between the police and Assam Rifles surfaced, with police officers accusing the latter of collusion. The confrontation arose when police teams, en route to search for the suspected militants, were allegedly blocked by Assam Rifles personnel using an armoured vehicle as a barrier.
In response, a defence source claimed the armoured vehicles were stationed in a "buffer zone" between Meitei and Kuki-Zomi territories to prevent a territorial breach. A memorandum submitted by the Manipur BJP unit to the Prime Minister demanded the permanent removal of Assam Rifles from the state, alleging partisanship and supporting one side.
Amid growing calls for Assam Rifles' removal, the Meira Paibis held protests demanding the same, prompting the Additional DGP (Law and Order) of Manipur to order the replacement of Assam Rifles with civil police and CRPF in a tense area.
However, an Assam Rifles officer disputed their involvement in that particular area.
The FIR and subsequent developments highlight the ongoing tensions between security forces and local communities, as allegations of bias and misconduct fuel demand for a change in the security apparatus.
The incident serves as a flashpoint, underscoring the complex dynamics and challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the region.
