A man has been arrested in Rajasthan’s Barmer district after a video showing him kicking an elderly woman during a public event went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

The incident occurred in the Bakhasar police station area at Jaton Ka Bera Sarla village, where villagers had gathered for a local programme with a DJ playing music. According to police, the elderly woman was dancing to the music when a young man suddenly approached from behind and kicked her, causing her to fall to the ground. The act shocked those present and abruptly halted the celebrations.

The video of the assault circulated widely online, drawing strong condemnation from social media users, many of whom described the act as inhumane and called for strict punishment.

Several comments also raised concerns about women’s safety in public spaces, with one widely shared remark stating, “Rajasthan is hell for women.”

Following the public outcry, Bakhasar police arrested the accused, identified as Deeparam. Officials said further legal action is underway and the matter is being investigated in accordance with the law.

Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and urged people not to justify or glorify violence in any form.
