Voting is underway in Karnataka today after the high-voltage campaigning by major political parties which ended yesterday.

Since the past few days, three major political parties - BJP, Congress and JD(S) have been holding mega rallies and road shows in a bid to woo the voters in the poll-bound state.

Amid the hullabaloo, public transport is likely to be hit as thousands of Karnataka State Road Transit Corporation (KSRTC) and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will be used for election duties on 9 and 10 May.

Reports have stated that KSRTC will be deploying 45 percent and BMTC will be deploying 27 percent of their fleet for election duties for two days.

Of the 8,100 fleet of KSRTC buses, nearly 3700 would be used to transport officials for poll duties and 1,868 BMTC buses will be used. However, no interrupted services will be seen on Volvo and other premium busses.

Meanwhile, the state will also observe dry days till tomorrow due to the election. The dry day began on Monday at 5 pm. Liquor shops and restaurants serving alcohol will also remain shut till midnight on 10 May, the voting day and also on 13 May, the counting day.

In view of this, all pubs, bars and liquor sales outlets will also remain shut in Bengaluru.

The Karnataka assembly elections will be held in a single phase on May 10, with the counting of votes scheduled on May 13. The majority mark to form the government is 113 seats.

Karnataka is the only south state where BJP is in power.
